English 235 serves as a "gateway" course for all English majors.

The student is introduced to the fundamentals of a few select schools of literary analysis.  In my version of this course, we explore multiple methodologies, with emphases on philosophic issues relating to models of consciousness, ideology, and language as expressed in Marxist criticism, Feminist criticism, structuralism (with an emphasis on the methodology of A. J. Greimas), and cultural studies.

For Fall 2007 the featured texts are The Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman.

Students are required to complete a series of essays and two exams, and to participate in class discussions and workshops.
