Opposing Viewpoint

The following is from an April 8, 2003, email I received from an individual identifying himself as Michael Nguyen regarding the accuracy of the statement you just read in the Field Note.

This is false. The Mexican Mafia, or Surenos, disrespected their Northern counterparts by making them wear red which was the the sign of a farmer. The Nortenos, also known as the Nuestro Familia and not the northern California Mexican Mafia, adopted the red rags as their gang colors and stated that it represents the efforts of Ceasar Chavez. That is where colors came from. The colors are reversed and a Norteno would probably look at someone with hate in their eyes if they were accused of being in the Mexican Mafia. If you don't believe me, you can always do additional research. I just hope I can be of help in making information more accurate on your site.
